Please view registration forms for information on class schedules
and fees. No new spring classes offered for 2010--check back late summer for Fall 2010 offerings!

Afterschool classes are held at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Historic site in downtown Asheville. Participants enjoy writing fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry in the very house that served as the basis for Look Homeward, Angel by Asheville's most famous writer.

Through fun, thought-provoking writing exercises and discussion, young writers will find an encouraging community where their creative efforts will shine. Weather permitting, the downtown location also provides opportunities to hunt inspiration on "writing safaris." Class participants have the chance to explore the the historic home as writers, not tourists.

Classes are designed age-appropriately. Focus is placed on learning how to think like a writer, creative process,  beginning fundamentals of writing craft and understanding conventions ( spelling, punctuation etc) as tools to shape one's writing in later drafts. Classes culminate with a public reading and participants are invited to share their work with friends and family. They are also welcome to publish their work on the True Ink website.

All classes are facilitated by Janet Hurley and are limited to six-eight participants each.  Students supply their own notebook, writing utensils, a snack, and a water bottle.

Monthly class/Email format for older, self-motivating participants  provides a more intensive experience. Students attend a kick-off class to establish a writing community and determine individual goals. Each student submits to me via email by mid-month.I respond via email with specific feedback and suggestions. Students are welcome to email me during the month with questions. Students may also send their work to other students to read and discuss during the second hour of the monthly class. The first hour is devoted to exploration of craft concepts relevant to all of the student work.

Privately arranged classes--Have an idea for a class focus or a group of eager young writers contact me via the registration form tell me a little about your idea--I'll be in touch soon!
